Equally as important and one of the things that truly sets midwifery care apart from the medical model of care is the intangible emotional support. We have a philosophy in the midwifery world referred to as “holding space.” What does that mean, taking up space? No. Holding space is a spiritual process; it lives where your sole resides. In order to hold space for someone you must let go of yourself and become a watcher or witness of something intangible, like thoughts and feeling. In our case it’s the process of a human life entering the world and breathing its first breath. There can be no greater honor than being present for this moment. At Seattle Midwives we hold that honor very dear to our hearts.
