What does the midwifery difference look like?

When you visit Seattle Midwives, we want it to feel like home. Come, sit, stay a while.
We have created a huge play area for your children! Let them run around, be playful, and have fun!

Your individualized maternity care begins right here.

To start off, I love to let clients know about what makes care with Seattle Midwives different: there are two of us! Kate and I do our best to make it to each meet n greet, appointment, and birth together. Many solo midwifery practices call a birth assistant to your birth, we try our best to avoid this situation as you have gotten to know both of us well through your care, and built trust in our relationship. The only time you would see someone at your birth you didn't know, would be if we had two clients in labor at the same time, which is a rare event. - Tiffany

After we meet for your free Meet 'n Greet (and we choose to work together, of course!), we'll start your individualized maternity care off right with a 1.5 hour visit.  We'll discuss and sign consent forms, review your medical history, do a brief physical exam, order any lab work, and leave plenty of room along the way to answer your questions. At the end of this long visit you'll feel like you've gained some new friends with expert knowledge, and  we'll be even more excited to be a part of your new and exciting journey!
The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.
Seattle Midwives are here to make sure you always know your choices, and maintain your autonomy so you always have your power.

Excellence in holistic prenatal care.

Throughout your entire pregnancy, from the time you enter into our excellent midwifery care right up until you give birth (about 12 visits), we meet monthly for 45-60 minutes. But, why do we schedule an entire hour?! We want to build a relationship with you, and we want to know about you and your life!

If you're new to home birth midwifery care you may not know what to think about building a personal relationship with your care providers. We understand, and we'll take it slow as we build up your trust. We'll really get to know you, your family, and build a relationship worth savoring for years to come.

Inclusive of your whole {unique} family dynamics.

You can expect comprehensive care every visit. We start with a check in and answer questions and concerns being mindful of your unique family dynamics. Then, we:

  • discuss upcoming lab tests, and ultrasounds if desired,
  • check fetal development progress, measure your fundus, feel the position of your baby, and listen to heart tones with a doppler,
  • talk about what labor looks likes, and when to call us,
  • prepare for your home birth by going over a thorough checklist,
  • collect a urine sample to monitor protein and sugars,
  • will ask you to weigh yourself,
  • take your blood pressure and measure.

We do all this in the most uplifting, respectful way possible, while including even the youngest of your family, and while paperless - we love the environment!

Labor & Birth with Seattle Midwives

How labor begins can vary from birth-to-birth. You can expect thorough, clear communication with us as we discuss, and decide together, when we should arrive. You can count on us to enter your home - your birth space - quietly and reverently. We will then assess your progress by asking a few questions, and through observation. From there we will:
  •  unload our bags, chock-full of everything we need to properly, and efficiently provide excellent midwifery care,
  • settle in, and get comfortable so you feel assured and safe that your skilled midwifery team is near,
  • address any questions or concerns you and your partner might have,
  • guide you through intense contractions to help you stay calm and focused,
  • encourage you to listen to your body, and believe in the power within you,
  • offer position suggestions to help you find comfort during labor, and pushing,
  • whole-family inclusion because a birth day is always a special occasion, and
  • intermittent monitoring of your vitals, and baby's heart tones.

After your baby is born, we will:
  • facilitate bonding by encouraging skin-to-skin snuggles,
  • monitor your post-birth bleeding,
  • assess your baby's needs, if any, including checking APGAR reflexes, breathing, weight & length,
  • begin tidying up and packing up our bags, including starting a load of laundry,
  • get you & your family in bed, snug as a bug in a rug!

Continuity of care weeks after baby is born.

The first two postpartum visits are in the comfort of your own home. We are just as excited to see YOU as we are your sweet baby! In these hour long appointments we will:

  • ask how you're doing emotionally and physically,
  • check your vitals,
  • assess your bleeding, and your shrinking uterus,
  • discuss breastfeeding challenges and successes,
  • check baby's vitals,
  • monitor baby for jaundice and adequate milk intake, and
  • conduct newborn metabolic and congenital heart defect screenings.
The fourth and final postpartum visit (in our office) includes discussion about breast health, birth control, a pelvic exam, and a pap smear if needed. By the time we get to this visit, you are well on your way to blissful parenthood, and the bond we've developed begins to tug at our heartstrings!

It is said that women in labor leave their bodies...they travel to the stars to collect the souls of their babies, and return to this world together.

The quality of care Seattle Midwives provided through our pregnancy and birth was above and beyond what we expected. We originally were using hospital midwives and decided during our 8th month to switch to a homebirth after touring the hospital delivery rooms and realizing it was not what we wanted.
The contrast in the care we received (hospital vs. Seattle Midwives) was like night and day. The midwives were very knowledgeable and caring, providing us with all the support and guidance that we needed as a couple and for the little person growing inside.
When the day of our birth came they were a calm and strong team, creating the space to labor safely with gentle advice and suggestions at the right times, as well as allowing me to labor in my own way. We couldn't be happier with our care. -EM
